Melasma is a very common condition of facial skin discoloration, typically found in women during their reproductive years. It is often seen on the chin, forehead, bridge of the nose, upper lips and upper cheeks of women between the ages of 20 and 50. It can also occur on the neck and forearms. Men can experience melasma too, although reported cases are uncommon.
Melasma is believed to be primarily related to internal hormonal changes in pregnant women, external hormone changes like birth control pills, or external environmental influences, such as sun exposure.
